The main thing I’ve learned in the short time that I’ve been reading about, collecting, and fishing with old Penn reels is that there isn’t much documented history about Penn reels. Here’s a little of what I could scrape together. I’m sure there’s more out there that I don’t know about. The new company was born on the 3rd. Henze’s first reels in The Mod F was a ounce surf casting reel with genuine bakelite side plates.

Penn is a staple in the fishing tackle industry. They were founded in by Otto Henze in Philadelphia, where he made the first two reel designs F and K while working for a bigger fishing reel manufacturer at the time. Today, they are headquartered in Spirit Lake, Iowa and manufacture over different reel models. But how many of those models are still manufactured in the USA?
We dug in to find out. Penn only makes a few of their reel styles in the U. Everything else is manufactured overseas. Those two styles make up only a small fraction of the total reels produced by Penn every year. For their American made products, Penn mostly operates out of their Philadelphia plant, which is one of their few remaining U.
The History of Penn Reels
I have had this rig since I was ten years old and that one is fifty years old. The reel still works like a clock. I bought two more from Walmart this winter because my son and nephew are ready for their first eight hour trips this year. This rod can be set-up and rigged to fish everything in South Jersey waters and beyond. My New Old Stock handles I have right now consist of perhaps different colors and shapes. Anyone that says that he can tell what year a Penn was made by looking at it in any fashion is simply misguided.
